Convesio WordPress Hosting Review

Convesio is a cloud-based managed WordPress and WooCommerce hosting platform. Convesio hosting is powered by Google Cloud, AWS, Steadfast, and Cloudflare Enterprise.

I’ve been using their hosting for the past few days (get a 30-day free trial), just for testing. In this article, I will share with you my experience with Convesio and what features and drawbacks I found here about their services.

About Convesio

Convesio is a web hosting company based in San Francisco, USA, founded in 2018 by Tom Fanelli. On the platform, you get managed WordPress hosting, web security, and speed optimization services.

You can create a WordPress or WooCommerce website with just a few clicks. Convesio provides facilities like autoscaling, auto-backup, and more.

Convesio does not use any type of control panel and installs each website in a different docker container (in an isolated environment from each other) so that there is no impact on website speed and traffic.

Convesio Hosting Platform User Experience

The dashboard of Convesio Hosting is very minimalistic, you can only install a WordPress website on this platform, so you don’t get any third-party control panels.

On most managed hosting platforms, you are not given any type of control panel, so the entire resource of the system is used only for your website and not the control panel. And without it, there is a lot of benefit in the performance and speed of the website.

Convesio Deployment Dashboard

In the image above you can see the dashboard of Convesio, very simple, organized, and very easy to use.

You only get access to useful things in the dashboard, database, PHP settings, backup, autoscaling, SFTP, etc. The rest of the critical and necessary settings are managed by the Convesio team.

Convesio Hosting Features

At Convesio, you are not given any kind of unnecessary facilities that you do not need.

You do not need to hire a system administrator to manage your website. From installation to backup and scaling of WordPress website, you can do it yourself.

Below I have discussed some of the features that I used during the test and also shared my experience.

  1. Minimal Dashboard (No require hiring a sysadmin)
  2. Security features (SSL, WAF, Malware Remover, etc)
  3. Latest technology (PHP, Docker, Node.js, etc)
  4. Automated Backup
  5. Automatic Scaling
  6. Caching
  7. SFTP

Dashboard

Convesio’s hosting dashboard is very simple, when you log in, you get a list of installed websites and the option to install new websites.

To manage the installed website, you must click on Manage, where you get the option to go to the site’s dedicated dashboard and WordPress dashboard.

When you visit Convesio’s dedicated site dashboard, you can see website statistics and logs.

Convesio Web Dashboard With Stats

Apart from this, you get the options of the domain, security, backup, and other settings to manage the website. And with these options, it is very easy to manage the WordPress website installed on Convesio, you don’t have to go through any extra hassle.

Security Features

Convesio Hosting uses strong security services to keep the website of its users secure.

Each website is protected with SSL and WAF (Web Application Firewall) to encrypt the WordPress websites and prevent external threats.

You all must have heard the name Cloudflare, it is a popular and most used security service provider, which gives you WAF as well as CDN (Content Delivery Network).

However, you can register for the free edition by visiting Cloudflare’s website where you get basic protection.

According to Convesio’s website, they use the Enterprise Edition of Cloudflare, which protects the entire server.

I like the fact that on Convesio’s platform, each website is installed using a different Docker container, which is very beneficial from a security point of view.

Suppose you use cPanel on a VPS server to manage your various websites, but suddenly your website gets hacked due to any reason, then there is a 90% chance that the hacker can control all your websites.

This is not possible on Convesio hosting, Docker is an open-source platform, which allows different application containers to be installed and these applications are isolated from each other (docker works like OS Virtualization).

Technology Used

Convesio uses the popular technologies and applications of managed WordPress hosting to provide its users with the best performance and services.

A WordPress website requires some essential services and applications, such as PHP, an HTTP server, and a database application.

Convesio gives you the option to choose from three different types of web servers, and two databases. And for each website, you must install a separate docker container, which you can do in a few clicks.

Convesio uses Applications and Services:

  1. PHP
  2. Apache/Ngnix/LiteSpeed
  3. MariaDB/Percona XtraDB Cluster
  4. Redis
  5. phpMyAdmin
  6. Node.js
  7. Docker
  8. GCP/AWS/Steadfast/OVH Cloud-based Hosting
  9. Cloudflare Enterprise

It’s been over a year since the stable version of PHP 8.0 was released, and the most recent version is PHP 8.1. If we talk about Convesio, then they use PHP 7.4 only.

WordPress always recommends using stable PHP from a security point of view, however, you may or maybe use a variety of plugins on WordPress and not all of them will be compatible with the latest PHP. So, it is better to use the old version of PHP.

Convesio only gives you the option to select PHP 7.4 and below, which I found strange.

Automated Backup

Convesio gives you the facility of automatic backup through which you can schedule the backup of your website and restore it whenever you want.

You can also download the backup file locally and later upload it and restore it.

Automatic Scaling

On Convesio Hosting, you get the facility of auto-scaling. This feature can be very beneficial for a fast-growing website. It allows you to increase or decrease the number of containers according to the load (traffic or HTTP requests) of your site with the facility of auto-scaling.

If more traffic is coming to the website, then Convesio automatically increases the number of containers and when the traffic is less then decreases the number of containers accordingly.

To enable this feature, you need to enable auto-scaling in the settings option by going to the hosting dashboard of the website.

Caching

Caching is an important factor for website performance and speed. Convesio uses Node.js-based load balancer servers for load balancing which are connected to 2 different IP addresses.

According to Convesio, they use a custom caching layer on their servers and use Cloudflare. Cloudflare is known in the world for its CDN, and web security.

According to Convesio, you can use your WordPress website without any caching plugin, and for this, you must enable caching from your hosting dashboard, after that Convesio automatically serves the cached content of your website to the visitors.

With caching, visitors do not have to fetch the content of the website from the server every time. When your CDN service (Convesio uses Cloudflare Enterprise CDN) creates a copy of the content to each of its servers and the visitor visits the website, the requested content is loaded immediately from the server close to the visitor.

When your CDN service (Convesio uses Cloudflare Enterprise CDN) creates a copy of the content to each of its servers and the visitor visits the website, the requested content is loaded immediately from the server close to the visitor.

SFTP

Accessing files on Convesio is a bit complicated. You are given the option of SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) instead of a web-based file manager.

To access the file system, you will need to install a third-party application like FileZilla on your computer, if you are using Windows, using the native file explorer you can access Convesio SFTP.

Convesio Performance Test

Convesio claims on its website that the performance of the website hosted on its platform is very good. Convesio can increase your website speed from ~160% to ~400% compared to your current hosting.

Convesio Performance comparison chart-1

They have maintained this comparison chart on the homepage of their website, a screenshot of which I have added above.

So, let’s know the actual performance test results. As I mentioned I took 30 day free trial of their service and deployed a WooCommerce website.

And which plugins and themes that have been used on the website are as follows:

  1. GeneratePress Theme
  2. Twenty Twenty-Two Theme
  3. GP Premium
  4. Optimole – Image optimization
  5. WooCommerce
  6. WP Rocket

So, I tested the speed of the WordPress website hosted on Convesio with three different tools and I was monitoring its uptime from the day first when deployed the website. Whose details I have given below.

Google PageSpeed Insight Performance Report

PageSpeed Insight Speed Test Report for Convesio

As you can see the Google PSI test results. Overall performance is not bad, but there were many opportunities to improve.

Like serving next-generation images (WebP format), it reduces the size of the images without losing the quality and loads faster compared to the traditional image formats.

As I have mentioned earlier, I installed a demo WooCoomerce site and its load is unnecessary CSS and JavaScript codes. These things affect badly upon site performance.

GTMetrix Performance Report

GTMetrix Speed Test Report for Convesio

In the second speed test, I used GTMetrix, as you can see in the image above. The performance was great (100%), and the structure (Your Structure Score is our proprietary assessment of Lighthouse and Custom GTmetrix audits) score was 98%.

Pingdom Performance Report

Pingdom Speed Test Report for Convesio

All three tools are used different measurement tactics and give different grades and scores.

However, the only tools matter that is Google Page Speed Insights (Lighthouse). Google uses the chrome browser to measure the speed test of a website on the client side.

I also monitored the uptime of the website, that was deployed on Convesio. As you can above in the image, I have pointed out the fluctuations in server response time, after three major high spikes it was stable all along.

Convesio Pricing & Plans

Alternatives of Convesio

As I mentioned above about all the plans, from the pricing to the specification of the hosting level and the accompanying services and other services.

I have also mentioned what I liked about it and what it lacked from using Convesio hosting.

I found the pricing of Convesio’s services too expensive and somewhat unnecessary. You will get great performance web hosting on other platforms as compared to their starter plan.

I have compared the starter hosting plan of Convesio with the plans of some other hosting providers, as mentioned below:
